There are 10 church bells in the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, all of which are mounted in the two main bell towers.Notre-Dame used to have other smaller bells in the spire and within the roof, but these were destroyed in the 2019 fire. For most of the cathedral's history, the bells have been primarily used as a striking clock, to call to prayer for the Angelus, and to announce.

Why did this block occur?

A Court in Germany ordered that access to certain items in the Project Gutenberg collection are blocked from Germany. Project Gutenberg believes the Court has no jurisdiction over the matter, but until the issue is resolved, it will comply.

For more information about the German court case, and the reason for blocking all of Germany rather than single items, visit PGLAF's information page about the German lawsuit.

How can I get unblocked?

All IP addresses in Germany are blocked. This block will remain in place until legal guidance changes.

If your IP address lookup is incorrect

Use the Maxmind GeoIP demo to verify status of your IP address. Project Gutenberg updates its listing of IP addresses approximately monthly.

Occasionally, the website mis-applies a block from a previous visitor. Because blocks are applied momentarily, you should try again later to visit https://www.gutenberg.org if Maxmind shows your address as being outside of Germany.

If your IP address is shown by Maxmind to be outside of Germany and you were momentarily blocked, another issue is that some Web browsers erroneously cache the block. Trying a different Web browser might help. Or, clearing the history of your visits to the site.

I have other questions or need to report an error

Please email the diagnostic information above to (removing the spaces around the @) and we will try to help. The software we use sometimes flags 'false positives' -- that is, blocks that should not have occurred. Apologies if this happened, because human users outside of Germany who are making use of the eBooks or other site features should almost never be blocked.

Overview

BEFORE THE BELL

Story by Kerry Kazmierowicztrimm & Denver Casado
Script by Kerry Kazmierowicztrimm

Our goal for Before the Bell was to create an engaging, authentic play about bullying that would start a real conversation.

The story takes place during one 20-minute period before school. During this time, a web of connected events leads to rising tension in which two bullies confront and physically assault another student. We witness this from the victim’s point-of-view.

Suddenly, time stops and restarts. We then see this same 20-minute period take place once again – but this time from the perspective of one of the bullies.

Then, the story restarts yet again, and we see this same 20-minute period occur for a third and final time – this time from the perspective of the other bully.

Through this shift in perspective, we’re able to witness all the complex and interconnected factors that can lead to violence in school.

We also witness the integral role bystanders play in these situations.

For full disclosure, the content of this play will not be appropriate for every school or community environment. At it’s core Before the Bell is a story about empathy, however, it touches upon modern day issues such as absent parents, homosexuality and domestic abuse.

This is why we felt it was important to pair this play with a helpful resource guide that provides teachers and directors with a comprehensive toolkit for exploring these issues. The Before the Bell Resource Guide, included with every purchase, contains 40 pages of meaningful and engaging activities for processing the themes of the play and continuing the conversation.

Before the Bell is available in two formats:

1) A Classroom Kit with all the tools you need to explore the play in a classroom setting.

2) A Production Kit with everything you need to mount the show onstage.
